Baby and Me Yoga

Baby and Me Yoga is an excellent class for moms to bond with their baby while meeting and developing a community with like-minded moms.  Each class is designed to introduce baby to yoga while simultaneously stretching, strengthening, and calming mom’s body.  Yoga poses for baby are designed to improve sleep, digestion and tummy troubles, reduce fussiness, strengthen their immune system, aid in overall development, and improve communication between mom and baby.  Moms also have the opportunity to practice yoga poses and breathing exercises designed specifically to aid in postpartum healing.  Baby and Me Yoga is an interactive class where moms are welcome to ask questions and share their experiences in a safe, supportive environment.  No yoga experience is required and babies ages 6 weeks to pre-walking are welcome in most classes.

If you are unable to attend a class or are wanting to dive into a home practice below are a few guidelines to get you started:

  • Mamas should not start a strenuous yoga practice until after their 6 week check up with their midwife or OB.  At this point bleeding should have mostly subsided and your uterus should be contracted back to its pre-pregnancy size.
  • Start with a short and simple yoga practice.  Honor yourself by listening to yourself and being mindful about your edges.
  • Asana should focus on strengthening your pelvic floor, realigning your pelvis, strengthening/toning your abdominal muscles, strengthening the muscles of your lower back, and mild heart openers being mindful not to further separate an existing diastasis.

Songs, movement, asana, and chanting are typically utilized in a Baby and Me yoga class to introduce baby to the practice of yoga.  Yoga should be enjoyable for your baby.  We never want to force babies to engage in the practice of yoga.  Rather, I encourage you to ask permission and then listen, observe, and be fully present to how your baby is responding.  Make eye contact with baby, touch and tickle your baby, sing to your baby, and breathe with your baby.

Congratulations on making a commitment to your own health and well-being as well as to the health and well being of your entire family!  Yoga is a way of being that makes true happiness possible.  It’s a way of being present and alive to all the gifts in this world.
